PC(USA) 227th General Assembly: Another Mainline Turn Toward Activist Theology

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) held its 227th General Assembly in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, June 22-July 2, 2026, under the theme "Persevering Toward Wholeness." The Assembly elected Marta Pumroy-Cordero and Rev. Dr. Kristopher Schondelmeyer as co-moderators and approved plans to hold the 2028 General Assembly in Puerto Rico.

On the institutional side, GA227 approved a $188.4 million two-year budget, continued the denomination's debate over funding models and per-capita pressure, confirmed entity leadership, and processed a large docket of committee business. Those actions matter because the PC(USA) remains the largest American denomination carrying the Presbyterian name, even as it continues a long decline in membership and influence.

The Assembly also took a series of high-profile public-policy actions. Commissioners advanced proposed Book of Order language condemning White Christian nationalism as theological error, acted on overtures related to Gaza and Middle East policy, and approved divestment-related actions involving Palantir Technologies and GE Aerospace. Supporters described those moves as faithful social witness; confessional Reformed readers will see another example of a mainline body speaking with great confidence on public activism while remaining deeply compromised on matters of doctrine, worship, ordination, and biblical authority.

R2 covers PC(USA) actions because they shape public understanding of Presbyterianism in the United States. We should not pretend agreement where there is none. Still, professional coverage requires that we pay attention, name the decisions accurately, and help readers distinguish historic confessional Presbyterianism from the progressive theological project that continues to define much of the PC(USA)'s public witness.
